Adults Modeling Respectful Behavior

Respectful behavior isn’t just what we say; it’s also what we do and don’t do.  As adults it is our responsibility to model this behavior to all children.  Children need to see and hear what is considered respectful.



  • Books in the area of nonviolent communication : Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life, is essential reading for anyone who wants to improve their communication skills. Applying the concepts within the book will help guide the reader towards a more loving, compassionate and nonviolent way of understanding and functioning with others, and foster more compassion in the world.
  • My Body Belongs to Me : The story is a simple scenario involving a gender neutral child who is inappropriately touched by an uncle's friend. The powerful message really comes through when the youngster tells on the offender and the parents praise the child's bravery. The last page shows a proud, smiling child doing a "strong arm" pose. The text assures them that it wasn't their fault and by speaking out the child will continue to grow big and strong. It is a compelling and uplifting message.


  • Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood : CCFC's mission is to reclaim childhood from corporate marketers. A marketing-driven media culture sells children on behaviors and values driven by the need to promote profit rather than the public good. The commercialization of childhood is the link between many of the most serious problems facing children, and society, today.
  • Center for Nonviolent Communication: An International Organization : Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is based on the principles of nonviolence-- the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies, whether verbal or physical, are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs, and that each of our actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs.
  • Foundations of Nonviolent Communication : Nonviolent Communication offers practical and powerful skills for compassionate giving and receiving. These skills are based in a consciousness of interdependence and the concept of "power with" instead of "power over" others
  • Teaching Tolerance: A Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center : Founded in 1991 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance is dedicated to reducing prejudice, improving intergroup relations and supporting equitable school experiences for our nation's children. We provide free educational materials to teachers and other school practitioners in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Your Role as a Parent or Caring Adult from Welcoming : All parents and caring adults have a role in creating welcoming elementary schools, from modeling caring and respectful behavior at home to educating your school community on the importance of the inclusion of all children and families. Tips on how to be the best ally to children.
