minnesota newborn screening program

State Laws

In Minnesota, newborn screening is mandated by Minnesota Statutes 144.125 – 144.128 and governed by Minnesota Rules 4615-0300 – 4615-0760. Newborn hearing screening is mandated by Minnesota Statute 144.966. Information about newborn screening must be provided by the hospital to all parents. All infants are screened unless a parent objects in writing. Newborn screening can save babies’ lives and protect babies’ health. Risks of not screening are serious.

Minnesota legislators recognize the benefit of newborn screening and the importance of performing this test correctly. The Minnesota statutes listed above govern the responsibilities of hospitals, physicians, and the Minnesota Department of Health in newborn screening, specimen collection, distribution of results, and follow-up services.
