The Minnesota Mobile Medical Unit
Providing emergency health care capacity in Minnesota
The Minnesota Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) is a mobile medical facility that can be dispatched to provide care in communities where local health care facilities are inoperable, or local capacity to provide care has been exceeded.
The MMU can be used to provide initial treatment for patients with a broad range of illnesses and injuries, and stabilize them for transport. When fully deployed, it has approximately 1,000 square feet of floor space, and can provide up to two critical carebeds and six general care beds.
The Metro Region Hospital Compact assumed the lead role in design and purchase of the MMU, with the support of Hennepin County Medical Center and The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). Other regional hospital compacts around the state provided valuable feedback for the MMU project.
Use of the MMU in responding to emergency incidents will be managed and coordinated by MDH.
