Renville and Kandiyohi counties to host “Pitch the Commissioner” event on August 15
Minnesota Health Commissioner Dr. Ed Ehlinger will kick off the fifth summer of “Pitch the Commissioner” events on Monday, August 15, by inviting community members to discuss public health while playing a game of horseshoes in Lake Lillian, Minnesota.
This year’s first “Pitch the Commissioner” event will take place from 2:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. at Lake Lillian City Park, located at 511 Lakeview Street in the city of Lake Lillian. For the first hour of the event, community members are invited to pitch a round of horseshoes with Commissioner Ehlinger while also pitching any public health questions, concerns or ideas on their minds.
Following the games, Commissioner Ehlinger will give a presentation titled, “What Does Minnesota Need to be Healthy?” and lead a discussion about health opportunities and challenges affecting communities in Renville and Kandiyohi counties.
Over the past five years, the horseshoe pit has proven to be an ideal setting for conversations about what community members feel is needed to help make their communities healthier places to live. Building on this tradition, this year’s “Pitch the Commissioner” event will focus on asking Minnesotans what they think their communities need to be healthy, as well as what help and support they need from local and state officials to make these healthy changes happen.
Commissioner Ehlinger said he looks forward to hearing good ideas and input shared by people from all walks of life.
“Pitch the Commissioner events are fun opportunities to get out into communities and meet people, and they provide us with insights that can turn into policy priorities,” Commissioner Ehlinger said. “I’ve long believed that communities know their needs best, and it’s important to take time to ask people to share those ideas. That’s the basic concept behind these events.”
This is the fifth year of the Pitch the Commissioner series. Previous summers included visits to all corners of the state from Cook to Marshall to Winona. This year, in addition to the event in Lake Lillian, Commissioner Ehlinger will visit Dakota County to host an event on Thursday, August 18.
