STAC Considers Requiring Tourniquets at all Designated Trauma Centers
At their December meeting the STAC took up the discussion about whether or not to require Minnesota’s designated trauma hospitals to stock at least one tourniquet in their emergency departments. Dr. John Hick suggested that the STAC consider amending the trauma system criteria to include a tourniquet in the list of required equipment. He presented two articles supporting the idea. The cost to each facility would be approximately $20 per tourniquet plus about 10 minutes of training for the provider and nursing staffs.
The STAC is expected to vote on the measure at their March meeting. Comments in support of or in opposition to the proposal should be addressed to the trauma system coordinator, Chris Ballard, at (651) 201-3841. before March 11, 2014.
