STAC Requires Tourniquets at Trauma Centers
At their March 2014 meeting the STAC voted unanimously to amend the list of required equipment available in the emergency departments of level 3 and 4 trauma centers to include at least one commercially manufactured arterial tourniquet. The new requirement is effective July 1, 2014. Tourniquets cost approximately $40 and are expected to require only 15 minutes of training.
To provide educational materials that can be used to implement the new equipment, the STAC will consolidate materials illustrating proper use of tourniquets from various sources and publish them well ahead of the implementation date. If you have training materials for tourniquets that you are willing to share, please send them to the trauma system coordinator by April 14.
