STAC Requires Tourniquets at Trauma Centers

At its March 2014 meeting the STAC voted unanimously to amend the list of required equipment available in the emergency departments of level 3 and 4 trauma centers to include at least one commercially manufactured arterial tourniquet. The new requirement will be in force beginning September 1, 2014. Tourniquets cost approximately $40 and are expected to require only 15 minutes of training.

An educational slide deck (PDF: 15 pages/482 KB) that includes links to other training materials is now available to assist trauma hospitals with its implementation.

If you have questions about the requirements concerning arterial tourniquests, please contact the designation coordinator.
