What is County Well Index?

The County Well Index (CWI) is an application that contains well and boring construction information and geologic interpretations of well/boring records for the state of Minnesota. CWI also contains some soil boring records, mineral exploration test hole records, and scientific/research test hole records.

Why enhance County Well Index?

The CWI application was on an outdated operating system. Although CWI provided basic services, CWI’s outdated systems eventually could no longer be supported by information technology services. Plus, over the years, manual data entry and application conversions created inadvertent data errors that needed to be systematically addressed and corrected. There were also thousands of well records that had accumulated as a backlog and needed to be entered.

What County Well Index enhancements have been accomplished?

  • Updated the application operational system.
  • Scanned 100,000 pre-1990 well records into CWI.
  • Entered or updated over 107,000 additional well records in CWI.
  • Replaced CWI Online with the new Minnesota Well Index (MWI).

What has changed with County Well Index Online?

CWI Online, a website application, was built in 2001 and was using outdated search and mapping functions. In addition, CWI Online did not provide access to water chemistry data or well sealing records.

CWI Online has been replaced with a new online website version called Minnesota Well Index (MWI). MWI provides access to well and boring construction record data from the CWI application and Minnesota Department of Health applications.

Note: Only sealed wells and borings identified with a Minnesota Unique Well Number will be available through MWI. Wells and borings sealed under the Minnesota Well and Boring Sealing Record Number (H series) are not available online. For assistance in obtaining well sealing records, contact MDH Well Management Section, St. Paul, Central Office/Metro District.

What is the next phase for County Well Index Enhancement?

Currently underway, the enhancement will provide a secure login for well contractors and others to submit notifications and permits, pay fees, and enter and manage records online. It is also the intent to make MWI more mobile device friendly.
