MDH Community Health Worker Training Courses

The Community Health Worker Training Program provides free online trainings for CHWs to advance knowledge on health promotion and chronic disease prevention topics. These online courses are intended to build upon the core competencies of the CHW Certificate Program in Minnesota. 

Trainings can be accessed through the MDH Learning Center.

Free training modules

Arthritis Management for Community Health Workers

This short, 15-minute course explores the role of community health workers in supporting patient arthritis management including understanding risk factors, management, treatment, and referral.

Helping Clients with Asthma – A Community Health Worker Approach

This module teaches about the signs and symptoms of asthma; describes medications, presents the correct use of asthma medicine devices, and how to identify asthma triggers. The course takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.

Community Health Worker (CHW) Role in Primary Diabetes Care

In this course, learn about diabetes and how community health workers can play a vital role in managing this serious chronic health condition.

Heart Health Conditions: Education for Community Health Workers

A short 10-minute course that reviews the risk factors for heart health conditions and what can be done to reduce a client's risk.

Stroke Care for Community Health Workers

A short 10-minute course that reviews the risk factors for stroke and what can be done to reduce a client's risk.

Additional trainings coming soon!

  • The Role of Community Health Workers in Oral Health: This course provides a brief overview of oral health issues, the CHW scope of practice in oral health, and resources for oral health promotion.
  • Brushing for Two: This course provides an overview of dental conditions and oral health care during pregnancy and for infants and toddlers. The course also covers the CHW role for promoting oral health and providing resources.
  • Dementia Training for Community Health Workers: This five-part course provides an overview of Alzheimer’s and dementia, risk reduction, dementia detection, living with dementia and caregiver support.

How to get started

  1. Register for a free account in the MDH Learning Center.
  2. Use the links above or search for the course title in the search bar at the top right of the portal.
  3. Enroll in the course and complete it at your own pace.
  4. Upon completion of each course, you will be asked to complete a course evaluation survey.
  5. Once the survey is completed you will receive a certificate of completion.
