State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS)

Developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) collects detailed information on overdose deaths occurring in Minnesota. The data are used to better understand circumstances surrounding the incident as well as the type and origin of drugs involved. Read more about this national system: CDC State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) (PDF).

The Minnesota Department of Health currently partners with all Minnesota medical examiners and coroners to collect data on unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths. Starting in 2019, more than 97% of all overdose deaths occurring in Minnesota have been reported in SUDORS.

From the Minnesota SUDORS data, we identified that over half of overdose deaths occurred in or near a residence with a bystander present.

To learn more about the circumstances around overdose deaths in Minnesota, read the summaries and reports:

Summaries

  • CDC Summary of Unintentional and Undetermined Intent Drug Overdose Deaths in Minnesota - 2020 (PDF)
  • CDC Summary of Unintentional and Undetermined Intent Drug Overdose Deaths in Minnesota - 2019 (PDF)

To view and download data in an accessible format, visit CDC SUDORS Dashboard: Fatal Overdose Data.

Reports

  • Characteristics of Unintentional and Undetermined Drug Overdose Deaths in Minnesota: SUDORS 2019 Findings (PDF)

SUDORS data supports the overdose prevention team's focus on providing the public with data to allow them to make data-driven prevention decisions that are best for their communities. More information on SUDORS can be found on the CDC's SUDORS dashboard.
