Glanders (Burkholderia mallei)
Glanders is a zoonotic disease that is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei. It primarily affects horses, donkeys, and mules, but can also be seen in other animals like goats, dogs, and cats. Glanders is rare in humans; although not seen in the United States since the 1940s, it does occur occasionally in other parts of the world such as Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central America, and South America. People can get glanders through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or tissues of infected animals.
