Medical Cannabis Disposal Methods

What are the preferred methods of disposing medical cannabis?

  • Bring unused medical cannabis product to a Medical Cannabis Dispensary.
  • Drop off remaining medical cannabis with your local law enforcement agency.
  • Dispose of medical cannabis product at a recognized drug take-back program within Minnesota.

If the above methods of disposal are unavailable to you, follow these steps to dispose of your unused medical cannabis medication in the household trash (just like you would do with other pharmaceuticals):

  • Remove the medical cannabis from its original container and mix it with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds, dirt, or cat litter (this makes the drug less appealing to children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through the trash seeking drugs).
  • Place the mixture in a sealable bag, empty can, or other container to prevent the drug from leaking.
  • Scratch off or mark out all identifying information on the medical cannabis label to make it unreadable. This will help protect your identity and the privacy of your personal health information.

NOTE: Do not give your medicine to friends or family.

When in doubt about proper disposal, ask a medical cannabis manufacturer or the Office of Medical Cannabis.
