10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. So, you have all this data. Now what?
Data is all around us, but so are myths and misconceptions that won’t go away. Does it still serve us to assume that data will speak for itself, or is it time to build intentional processes for making meaning out of data and reminding people of their connection to it? Presenters will share what they’ve learned about the complex and relational work that goes into turning data from analysis to action. Key choice points will be highlighted in data communication, from deciding what’s the most important takeaway from a data table to deciding what context needs to be included in the final product. Participants will also be given the opportunity to apply these skills using an example data table that seeks to answer one of the analysis questions crafted during the data build activity at the October meeting. Together, participants will make meaning of the data, choose a “headline” for the data story, brainstorm different ways of framing and contextualizing the data, and vote on what type of chart or graph works best to convey the data story.
