Longitudinal Follow-up for Newborn Screening Conditions

Longitudinal Follow-up uses a systems-based approach to understand and promote health and well-being for children with conditions included in Minnesota Newborn Screening and their families.

Longitudinal Follow-up collaborates with parents, health care providers, educators, local public health nurses, and others statewide to:

  • Connect children with a confirmed diagnosis of a newborn screening condition and their families to useful resources, services, and supports of interest through community partnerships (for example, family support organizations and/or local public health). Resources may be financial, insurance, transportation, food, childcare, home visiting, early intervention, educational supports, and more.
  • Gather and analyze relevant data to:
    • Ensure children with newborn screening conditions and their families receive helpful information, community resources, and services of interest.
    • Understand outcomes during childhood (less than 18 years old) to aid in evaluation of the benefits of early identification through newborn screening.
    • Identify gaps and make improvements.
  • Inform policy and decision-making through a health equity perspective.
