If you need free and confidential support call the
988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
If you need immediate medical help call 911!

It can be hard to know what to do if you or someone you are concerned about is struggling with thoughts of suicide.  Help is available and there are steps you can take to get the support you need.

If you are struggling

If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, do not wait for someone to reach out. Connect with a mental health professional or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeine or reach out to one of the resources below:

If you are concerned someone is at risk for suicide

It is important to have an honest conversation with someone you are concerned about.

  • Check in with them by phone or text message to see how they are doing. Meet with them in person if you can or talk in private and let them know you care.
  • Ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide. Talking about suicide does not put the idea in their head. Instead, it lets the person know that you are willing to talk about suicide and gives them an opportunity to share what is on their mind.
  • Always take it seriously, if someone expresses, they are thinking about suicide. Stay with the person and do not leave them alone.
  • Remove any lethal means like firearms, alcohol, drugs, or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.
  • Dial 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. For an immediate medical emergency, call 911.
  • Take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.
