Mandated Reporting for Abuse and Neglect

Health Services staff play a vital role in safeguarding the well-being of children and adolescents and responding effectively to instances of abuse and neglect, helping to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

All school staff are defined as mandated reporters in Minnesota, meaning they are legally required to report any suspected cases of child abuse, vulnerable adult abuse (for students 18-21), or neglect to the appropriate authorities. It is essential that school staff, including health services providers, understand when and how to make a report. The Minnesota Department of Human Services(DHS) website has great resources to help understand the process. The mandated reporter brochure describes the role of the mandated reporter and what to expect during the process.

A list of county and tribal agencies to contact for reporting is provided for your use.

Cases of vulnerable adult abuse should be reported to the MAARC -Adult Abuse Reporting at 1-844-880-1574.

For more information on vulnerable adult reporting visit Minnesota DHS Vulnerable Adult Protection and Elder Abuse.

Safe and Supportive Schools

School health services play a vital role in improving school safety and climate. The Minnesota Department of Education School Safety Technical Assistance Center is dedicated to helping schools and community members develop safe and supportive learning environments, thereby increasing academic success for all students. Their website has great resources including model policies and training opportunities.
