Health Screenings
Prevention and early intervention are foundational in making sure that every child in Minnesota reaches his or her full potential. Screenings and early access to care also ensure the most effective medical monitoring and treatment. The best practices in screening are outlined below.
Early Childhood Screening
Minnesota Statute 142D.091. 17 School districts are required to complete an early childhood developmental screening on all children prior to entering kindergarten, with programs targeting children ages three and four.
Oral Health Screening
School nurses may assist in coordinating an oral health screening program or may include a dental screening as part of a health office visit to help triage students in need of oral or dental care.
Postural Screenings for Scoliosis
Postural screening in the school setting is not recommended as an evidenced-based practice.
Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision screening is recommended in grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10. Hearing screening is recommended annually for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade and again in grades 5, 8, and 11. Resources and links to education and training including videos for training review.
