Every year in Minnesota about 300 babies die before their 1st birthday. To protect the privacy of the families of these babies, infant death data is not available by single years. Data is available by three-year and five-year groupings (cohorts).
This dashboard is interactive. Users can select options to view infant death data in different ways. Hover the cursor over data points on the charts to see additional information and how to interpret the data. Read About the Data to learn more about the source and data definitions.
Section 1: Infant deaths by region, death characteristics, maternal characteristics, and program use
This interactive dashboard has many options to display information about infant deaths. The first section of the dashboard allows data to be viewed by different Minnesota regions.
Map: By Minnesota county
The map shows data by Minnesota county. Use the two drop-down options above the map to change the data to look at a specific death year cohort and Minnesota regions.
Bar charts: Cause of death and infant age at death (rates)
The bar charts show the rate of infant deaths by cause of death and by the infant’s age at death. These charts show how many infants died per every 1,000 live births. Use the drop-down options to select a death year cohort and a Minnesota region. These selections will apply to both charts.
Bar charts: Cause of death and infant age at death (percentages)
The bar charts show the percentage of infant deaths by cause of death and by the infant’s age at death. These charts only include infant deaths; they do not include any live births in the calculations. Use the drop-down options to select a death year cohort and a Minnesota region. These selections will apply to both charts.
Bar charts: By other characteristics
The bar charts show the rate of infant deaths by selected characteristics. Use the drop-down options to select a death year cohort and a Minnesota region. These selections will apply to all bar charts in this section.
Section 2: Infant deaths by maternal race/ethnicity and death characteristics
This section of the interactive dashboard shows data by the race/ethnicity of the mother/birthing parent. These breakout options were selected because data often differs by race/ethnicity.
Bar chart: Race/ethnicity and foreign-born status
Within race/ethnicity groups, there can be differences between those who were born in the United States (U.S.-born) compared to those who were born outside of the U.S. (foreign-born). Use the drop-down above the bar chart to select a death year cohort. The checkboxes next to this bar chart can be checked and unchecked to show race/ethnicity groups and foreign-born statuses of the mother/birthing parent. Selections will apply to this bar chart only.
Bar charts: Cause of death and infant age at death (rates), by race/ethnicity
The bar charts show the rate of infant deaths by cause of death and by the infant’s age at death, for the race/ethnicity group selected. These charts show how many infants died per every 1,000 live births. Due to small numbers, the data cannot be shown by foreign-born status. Use the drop-down options to select a death year cohort and a race/ethnicity. These selections will apply to both charts.
Bar charts: Cause of death and infant age at death (percentages), by race/ethnicity
The bar charts show the percentage of infant deaths by cause of death and by the infant’s age at death, for the race/ethnicity group selected. These charts focus only on infants who died. Due to small numbers, the data cannot be shown by foreign-born status. Use the drop-down options to select a death year cohort and a race/ethnicity. These selections will apply to both charts.
