Every year in Minnesota about seven out of 100 babies are born at low birth weight, which is below 5 pounds and 8 ounces, or below 2,500 grams.
This dashboard is interactive. Users can select options to view low birth weight data in different ways. Hover the cursor over data points on the charts to see additional information and how to interpret the data. Read About the Data to learn more about the source and data definitions.
Section 1: Low birth weight by region, maternal characteristics, and program use
This interactive dashboard has many options to display information about low birth weight. The first section of the dashboard allows data to be viewed by different Minnesota regions.
Map: By Minnesota county
The map shows data by Minnesota county. Use the two drop-down options above the map to change the data to look at a specific birth year(s) and Minnesota region.
Line chart: By other characteristics
The line chart shows the percent of babies born at low birth weight across time by selected characteristics. Use the drop-down options above the line chart to select a birth year(s) and Minnesota region. Use the “select a field to display on the line chart” drop-down to look at further breakdowns of data.
Bar charts: By other characteristics
The bar charts show the same additional characteristics data shown on the line chart. Use the drop-down options to select a specific birth year(s) and a Minnesota region. These selections will apply to all bar charts in this section.
Section 2: Low birth weight by maternal race/ethnicity and foreign-born status
This section of the interactive dashboard shows data by the race/ethnicity and foreign-born status of the mother/birthing parent. These breakout options were selected because data often differs by race/ethnicity. Within race/ethnicity groups there can be differences between those who were born in the United States (U.S.-born) compared to those who were born outside of the U.S. (foreign-born).
Bar chart: Race/ethnicity and foreign-born status
Use the drop-down above the bar chart to select a birth year(s). The checkboxes next to this bar chart can be checked and unchecked to show race/ethnicity groups and foreign-born statuses of the mother/birthing parent. Selections will apply to this bar chart only.
Symbol charts: Race/ethnicity and foreign-born status
The remaining charts show data by the race/ethnicity and foreign-born status of the mother/birthing parent and other maternal factors. The birth year drop-down and checkboxes for the race/ethnicity groups and foreign-born statuses of the mother/birthing parent below apply to the remaining charts.
