Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Contact Calculator

A quick reference for knowing when BFPC contacts are due.

Peers may use the Peer Texting Examples (PDF) to better support participants throughout pregnancy and postpartum.

How to use

To calculate the recommended prenatal contacts, enter the "Expected Due Date" date, with the option to enter the "Date Referral Assigned" date to calculate the initial prenatal introduction contact. For postpartum contacts, enter the "Actual Date of Delivery" date.

All dates must be entered in a MM/DD/YYYY format and can be selected by using the calendar widget.

Peer Contact Frequency Guidelines

Pregnant women

  • Monthly
  • More frequently as due date nears

Early weeks postpartum

  • Within 24 hours if there are problems
  • Every 2-3 days during the first week
  • Weekly the rest of the first month

After the first month

  • The peer counselor and the WIC participant can determine the contact schedule. The peer coordinator can provide guidance in frequency of contacts per their agency's program
  • WIC recommends monthly contacts during the first year, and 1-2 days before the participant returns to work or school, and 1-2 days after the return to work or school
