May 25, 2023 Situation Update Archive
Due to changes in COVID-19 disease surveillance following the end of the national Public Health Emergency, certain data elements were removed from the Situation Update website on June 1, 2023. This archived data was posted May 25, 2023 with data current as of 4 a.m. on the Tuesday prior, unless noted otherwise.
- 7-day moving average of cases (CSV)
- Cases over time are shown using a 7-day moving average of the daily count of all cases and the statewide daily case rate.
- To get the 7-day moving average for cases, we add all the cases from the previous 7-days (including the current date) and then divide by 7.
- To get the 7-day moving average for rates, we add all the rates (number of cases divided by the total Minnesota population, multiplied by 100,000) from the previous 7 days (including the current date) and divide by 7.
- A 7-day moving average provides a more useful representation of the data by smoothing out any short-term spikes or dips that occur across a week because of external factors not related to disease transmission, such as a facility not being open on certain days or delays in data reporting.
- Case Rate by County of Residence (CSV)
- County rates are calculated using probable and confirmed cases by reported county of residence by week of specimen collection date divided by the county population. The rate is then multiplied by 100,000.
- Weeks are defined as Sunday through Saturday. Therefore "Last Week" corresponds with the Sunday through Saturday of the week prior to when the data are posted.
- Case Rate Sex (CSV)
- Rates are calculated using probable and confirmed cases by reported sex at date of specimen collection divided by the total sex-specific Minnesota population. The rate is then multiplied by 100,000.
- The “total” rate line is the total of all cases in this graph (for whom sex data is available) divided by the Minnesota population. The rate is then multiplied by 100,000.
- The age-adjusted rates per 100,000 are obtained by taking the incidence rate per 100,000 (as described above) for all cases for whom sex data is available and standardizing to the U.S. 2000 Standard Population which can be obtained from the National Cancer Institute: Standard Populations (Millions) for Age-Adjustment.
- Variant Percentage (CSV)
- On a weekly basis, approximately 5% to 20% of cases of COVID-19 had sequencing information available, providing scientists with valuable information about variants circulating in the state.
- Routine sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 specimens began in January 2021. There is a delay of a couple weeks for posting variant data due to the time it takes to transport specimens, run sequencing tests, and analyze the data.
- Variants of Concern are separated in the figure and named using World Health Organization (WHO) naming conventions. Variants of Interest (VOI) are included as a single group.
- Weekly Setting Specific Data - Child Care and K12 Schools (CSV)
Cases of COVID-19 among child care attendees and staff, by week, as reported by child care programs. Child care programs included: licensed child care centers, certified child care centers, and licensed family child care. Cases of COVID-19 among pre-K through grade 12 school students and staff, by week as reported by schools. Note: As of August 2022, child care and k12 school facilities moved to facility-level reporting. This means child care programs report an aggregate number of cases among children and staff to the state on a weekly basis rather than individually reporting cases. - Reported Cases of COVID-19 among Students and Staff in Institutions of Higher Education (CSV)
Weekly aggregate case counts of COVID-19 among students, faculty, and staff in Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) by week as reported by IHE. Institutions of higher education (IHE) include colleges, universities, and private career schools. In August of 2022, IHE began reporting to MDH, weekly aggregate case counts from one or more of the following sources: campus health services, campus test sites, and/or faculty, staff, and student reports of self-tests. - COVID-19 Cases Associated with High Risk Congregate Living Settings Data (CSV)
Cases of COVID-19 associated with high risk congregate living in settings is by date of specimen collection.- High Risk Congregate Living Settings are those that provide temporary or transitional housing, or that serve people experiencing homelessness.
- At-home Tests includes all over-the-counter or at-home self tests. Facility-led Tests includes all tests conducted by a facility, healthcare provider, or clinic.
- Date uses the specimen date of the positive test result.
- Note: Semi-Congregate Housing includes settings that provide temporary or transitional housing and may have some congregate spaces.
- COVID-19 Cases Associated with Jails or other Community-based Correctional Facilities (CSV)
Cases of COVID-19 associated with jails or other community-based correctional facilities is by date of specimen collection.- Community-based Correctional Facilities includes juvenile detention centers, DOC-licensed youth facilities, DOC-licensed adult facilities, halfway houses, and reentry programs.
- At-home Tests includes all over-the-counter (OTC) or at-home self tests. Facility-led Tests includes all tests conducted by a facility, healthcare provider, or clinic.
- Date uses the specimen date of the positive test result.
July 28, 2022 & October 27, 2022 Setting Specific Data Archive
In August 2022, some settings moved to facility-based reporting. Because the reporting methods are different, this past data cannot be directly compared to other archived data or current data.
Current data are available from Setting Specific Data.
- Downloadable data file: Weekly Setting Specific Data (CSV)
This file contains weekly data previously presented on the Setting Specific Data portion of the Situation Update, updated 7/28/2022 for:- Potential Exposure in Child Care and Youth Serving Programs: Cases of COVID-19 among children and youth with potential exposure in a child care or youth serving program setting outside of their home and outside of the K-12 instructional day by specimen collection date.
- Student Cases Associated with Pre-K through Grade 12 School Buildings: Cases of COVID-19 associated with students attending school and hospitalizations, ICU hospitalizations, and deaths of staff working at a prekindergarten through grade 12 building while they were able to spread COVID-19.
- Resident Cases Associated with Congregate Care Settings: Cases of COVID-19 associated with residents living in congregate settings is by specimen collection date. Congregate care settings include nursing homes, assisted living-type facilities, group homes, and other communal-living settings with a health care component.
- Downloadable data file: IHE Facilities Reporting Cases: Weekly Setting Specific Data (CSV)
This file contains weekly data previously presented on the Setting Specific Data portion of the Situation Update, updated 10/27/2022 with the number of Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) facilities that have had cases of COVID-19 in faculty, staff, and students working or enrolled at a Minnesota IHE. IHE include colleges, universities, and private career schools. Number of IHE Facilities reporting cases by week are by specimen collection date. Numbers listed as cumulative total are cumulative since Aug. 1, 2020.
June 29, 2022 Situation Update Archive
The last daily situation update was posted June 29, 2022, with data current as of 4 a.m. the previous business day unless noted otherwise.
- Positive cases by date specimen collected data table (CSV)
Reinfections by date specimen collected data table (CSV)- Minnesota uses the CSTE: Update to the standardized surveillance case definition and national notification for 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) (PDF).
- A person is counted as having a reinfection if they test positive (confirmed or probable) for COVID-19 more than 90 days after a previous lab-confirmed case.
- Prior to 11/1/21, people were only counted as a case once, even if multiple positive tests were recorded for a person over 90 days apart.
- Case data is represented by the date of specimen collection.
- The total cumulative number of people who have tested positive is presented as "Total positive people".
- The total number of reinfections is counted in "Total number of reinfections (cumulative)"
- A person with a positive PCR test result following a positive antigen test result would move from being a probable case to a confirmed case.
- A person with a negative PCR test result following a positive antigen test result would still be considered a probable case.
- As of 10/28/21, case interviews are prioritized. Priority groups include people under 18 years old, hospitalizations, deaths, and people with vaccine breakthrough or variants. Therefore, not all cases were contacted for interview.
- Minnesota uses the CSTE: Update to the standardized surveillance case definition and national notification for 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) (PDF).
- Hospitalization data table (CSV)
- Hospitalization data show how many people required admission to a hospital and ICU. Admissions include all Minnesota cases regardless of location of hospitalization. Cases in residents of other states hospitalized in Minnesota are not included.
- “Total hospitalizations” and “Cases admitted to a hospital” include both ICU and non-ICU admissions.
- Admission dates are when the case was first admitted to the hospital. In most cases, the original admission was for COVID.
- Cases hospitalized before they were diagnosed with COVID also use original admission dates. This is the reason for admission dates before the first case was identified in Minnesota.
- Hospitalization data show how many people required admission to a hospital and ICU. Admissions include all Minnesota cases regardless of location of hospitalization. Cases in residents of other states hospitalized in Minnesota are not included.
- Deaths data table (CSV)
- Total deaths with laboratory testing are deaths due to COVID-19 with:
- A positive PCR test (confirmed case) or antigen test (probable case) for SARS-CoV-2
AND- COVID-19 is listed on the death certificate
OR
Clinical history/autopsy findings that provide evidence that the death is related to COVID-19 without an alternative cause (i.e. drowning, homicide, trauma, etc.).
- COVID-19 is listed on the death certificate
- A positive PCR test (confirmed case) or antigen test (probable case) for SARS-CoV-2
- Total non-laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 deaths have COVID-19 listed on the death certificate, but no documented positive laboratory test for SARS-CoV-2.
On 10/14/20, this category name was changed from “probable deaths” to "non-laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 deaths." - Deaths are represented by the date of death. Deaths are added as they are reported and verified. This is why there is a lag for the dates shown in the table.
- Total deaths with laboratory testing are deaths due to COVID-19 with:
- Demographics:
- Age group data table, including age group of deaths (CSV)
- Number of cases and deaths in each age group is based on age of person at the time they were tested.
- Gender data table (CSV)
- Race and ethnicity data table, including race and ethnicity of deaths (CSV)
- As of 10/28/21, case interviews are prioritized. Priority groups include people under 18 years old, hospitalizations, deaths, and people with vaccine breakthrough or variants. Therefore, not all cases were contacted for interview. If cases were not interviewed, race and ethnicity information from disease reporting is included when available.
- County of residence data table, including county of residence of deaths (CSV)
- County of residence is confirmed during the case interview. At the time of this posting not all interviews have been completed.
- County of residence is confirmed during the case interview. At the time of this posting not all interviews have been completed. The county residence data may not equal the total number of reported positive cases.
- For deaths by county of residence: The county of residence reported is the county the person lived in at the time of the death. Those living in congregate living settings at the time of death are reported by the location of the congregate living setting.
- We will not release specific locations for any patients being tested in order to protect patient privacy.
- Age group data table, including age group of deaths (CSV)
